Hospitals
Sparrow Health System was Lansing's first health service provider, founded in 1896 by a group of women who volunteered to care for the sick and injured. Sparrow, a not-for-profit organization guided by volunteer boards, has now grown to a 687-bed teaching hospital with 17 operating rooms and more than 550 physicians and 2,880 staff members providing care to 120,000 patients each year. Sparrow serves as the regional center for an eight-county area, providing specialty care in radiation therapy, high-risk obstetrics, fetal and maternity services, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, and emergency services. In addition, Sparrow provides specialized intensive care units in pediatrics, neonatology and neurosurgery, and a cleft palate clinic. Sparrow Health System is approved as the region's only Level 1 Trauma Unit.
