Residency Education

The MSU Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery was developed with a strong focus on education. The educational program has been designed to touch on all aspects of surgical training. Residents participate in all Department of Surgery cases and are expected to make decisions about patient evaluation, perioperative care, and intraoperative issues that are appropriate for their level of training. The focus of general surgery training is on developing surgeons with the flexibility to adapt to ever-changing technology.

Every week, faculty and residents meet for Grand Rounds, M&Ms, and various Educational conferences including Textbook Review, Basic Science, ABSITE Review, and Journal Club. Conferences are run by faculty and senior residents and are required for all residents. All Residents are expected to keep up with Textbook reading for conferences and be prepared for weekly quizzes.

In the spirit of education, all residents are appointed as clinical instructors and as such, have a responsiblity to teach medical students, off-service residents, and even faculty.

Walk rounds are carried out three times weekly by the Attending of the Week. These faculty also staff the weekly resident clinics.

Residents are also required to participate in the American Board of Surgery In-Training Exam (ABSITE) each January. Oral exams are scheduled throughout the year and Senior Residents are scheduled for Practice Mock Oral exams each spring.
