Age and Stability The MSU Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery was founded in 1988. In 2000 the program was approved to expand from 3 to 4 residents. The last RRC was in 2004 and we received full 5-year accreditation
Conferences and Special Events Thursday: 7-8 Grand Rounds 8-9 M&M 9-9:30 Resident Meeting with Program Director 9:30-11:00 Textbook, Basic Science, and ABSITE review Journal Clubs held monthly. Walk Rounds: MWF with the Attending of the Week. Anatomy Course designed for surgical residents provided by the Department every other year for PGY 3-4 Residents. Mock Oral Boards provided for all PGY level residents. Research Forum held each year in the spring.
Research Resident engagement in research activities is strongly encouraged. Each resident is expected to design and carry out a research proposal and project annually. All residents present a poster or oral presentation at the annual Research Forum.
Operative Experience PGY1 residents operate early and average 160 procedures during their first year
Call Schedule Q4-5 in house calls per month
Salary PGY 1: $42,852; PGY2: $44,013; PGY 3: $45,259; PGY 4: $47,779; PGY 5: $50,439.
Vacation PGY 1&2: Two (2) weeks annually PGY 3-5: Three (3) weeks annually All residents receive four (4) additional days off during Winter/New Years Holidays Maternity and paternity leaves are available if needed. Personal Days: Up to eight (8) days per year.

Housing Housing will be paid by the Department for required off-campus/out of town rotations.
Mileage For all primary rotations in Flint and Grand Rapids if housing is not provided, an average of $300/month is provided to cover mileage.

Work Hours MSU Surgery Residency Program has taken a proactive role in reducing the number of work hours for residents and abides by the duty hour limitations placed by the ACGME in 2003.
