Welcome to the MSU Department of Surgery Student Section. As a department we are happy to have students rotate with us and strive to provide a good experience and sound surgical education. There are many interested faculty and residents spread across 6 campuses that are excited to be part of your educational experience. All 6 campuses work closely with MSU College of Human Medicine to ensure that the educational goals and objectives of every rotation are met. Because of the number of campuses and the changes that inevitably happen, but that may not have been updated on this page, we encourage you to contact your local program coordinator or click on the CHM logo above to access the latest information from the MSU CHM Student pages. We are currently working on updating these pages and encourage you to check back as more information is added.

While working with our department in Lansing you will often have the oportunity to work one-on-one with various Attendings as well as with Residents and the OR staff as part of the larger surgical team. You will be expected to learn about surgical diseases and their treatment in the operating room as well as on the floor. Emphasis is placed on individual development and opportunities will be provided to expand your proficiency with suturing and knot tying skills, sterile technique, tissue handling, and occassionally small procedures.

As a department we encourage you to explore surgery and welcome your questions. Please feel free to contact us about setting up a rotation or externship. We look forward to working with you on the floor and hope that your rotation will be educational and enjoyable.
