Overview
Residents train approximately two-thirds of their time at Sparrow Hospital, a 600+ bed tertiary care center and Level I trauma center. The remainder of training is conducted at McLaren Regional Medical Center Flint, a 450+ bed hospital. Transplant and pediatric surgery rotations occur on the Grand Rapids campus.
To accomplish our core mission of providing the highest quality patient care, cutting edge research, and outstanding education, residents at the intern level are provided the opportunity to operate, a unique experience when compared to other programs. Residents are expected to make clinical decisions about their patients, provide thorough evaluation, peri-operative care and excel in intraoperatve skills and surgical anatomy. The focus of general surgery training is on developing surgeons with safe and the highest quality of surgical skills, with flexibility to adapt to advanced technologies in the medical field.
Residents are vital to the educational mission of CHM and in the spirit of education, are appointed as clinical instructors with responsibility to teach medical students, non-surgical residents and other professionals in training. Their educational experience requires they read and learn evidence based practice and develop the skills necessary to transfer their knowledge and expertise from bench to bedside.
Faculty are dedicated to providing the best surgical training program that will prepare the next generation of surgeons. The Lansing campus includes fourteen faculty (LINK) surgeons with expertise in a variety of clinical specialties including minimally invasive, bariatric, endocrine, breast, surgical oncology and trauma/critical care. The Flint Campus includes private surgeons with specialties in vascular, general surgery, colorectal and minimally invasive procedures.
Our residents average approximately 1000-1200 cases during their training, with opportunity to participate in case types most suited for their area of interest. Residents have demonstrated a 79% five-year first time pass rate on the Qualifying Board exam and 86% first time pass rate for the Certifying Exam.
Our graduate residents have been successful in their post-graduate careers, with many remaining in Michigan to help serve the needs in our state in rural general surgery or subspecialties. More than half of our graduates elect to attend fellowships, adding to the foundation that was acquired while at MSU.
