Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Michigan State University Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery. The residency program originated in 1988 and is currently a part of MSU's College of Human Medicine (CHM), Graduate Medical Education program.
Faculty, residents and medical students work together to serve some of Michigan’s most underserved and vulnerable members. Our program is affiliated with the Lansing and Flint campuses; two of seven MSU affiliated campuses:
Our residency program is a five-year, non-pyramidal program that accepts four categorical residents each year from accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. Preliminary positions are also available at the Program Director's discretion.
In addition, we have a 1 year fellowship position in Surgical Critical Care that is available to general surgery applicants PGY3 or higher.
We have been very proud of our 20-year history of successful accreditations received from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) in Surgery. However, in February 2008, our program was cited for violations and placed on two years probation. Citations included duty hour violations, verification of resident complement number and documentation. Each citation has been resolved and with the new Department leadership, we are confident and prepared for our revisit, tentatively planned for February 2010.
Please review the additional information provided on the residency pages. I welcome any input and comments regarding our program. If I can assist you, please feel free to contact me directly or one of our residency coordinators.
