Department Research
Academic inquiry is a key part of who we are and what we do. The Department conducts research on multiple levels funded by the NIH and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, by pharmaceutical companies, by various foundations, and by pilot funding from MSU and the department. Our research ranges from epidemiology, participation in multicenter clinical trials, and single center patient studies through translational collaborations with basic scientists, animal studies, and cellular and molecular in vitro work. Resident, postdoctoral, and student trainees are encouraged to participate and present regularly at national and regional meetings.
A sampling of current ongoing studies includes:
- the epidemiology of breast cancer
- the impact of various management protocols on the outcome of critically ill patients and trauma
- identification of novel psychological effects associated with hand surgery
- investigations of the role of inflammatory crystals in colon cancer
- metabolic and central nervous system effects of bariatric surgery
- the effects of bowel obstruction and intestinal defunctionalization on gut mucosal healing in rodent models
- effects of TGF-beta on mucosal healing in vitro and in vivo
- in vitro and in vivo studies on the regulation of cancer metastasis
For individual faculty members’ research interests, please check their Faculty profiles.
The Department welcomes premedical and medical student volunteers interested in helping with our research efforts, as well as inquiries from resident and postdoctoral trainees wishing to spend time in our laboratories.
Inquiries should be directed to:
