Welcome to the Michigan State University Department of Surgery.  The College of Human Medicine was founded some forty years ago to “serve the people” by educating physicians for the state of Michigan.  Thus it has a strong tradition in primary care and even today over half the graduating class enters a primary care residency.  The College of Medicine is a community based medical school and operates a 4 year campus in East Lansing and 2 year campuses in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Flint, Saginaw and Marquette, Michigan.  The College is in the process of expanding the Grand Rapids campus from 2 to 4 years. Medical students are with us for a required 8 week clerkship in their 3rd year and 4 weeks in their 4th year.

The Department of Surgery sponsors a fully accredited residency program which builds on the strengths of the Lansing and Flint campuses.  Our residents have exposure to a broad array of open, minimally invasive and endoscopic cases and early operative experience is a key part of their education.  Approximately half of our graduates become practicing general surgeons while the other half go on to fellowship training. The Department has a strong tradition of surgical education and residents participate in a variety of didactic, lab and other educational experiences. Our culture is one of inquisitiveness where each member seeks the answers to surgical problems.  Each resident therefore is engaged in one or more scholarly projects through the course of his or her training.   Most of all we value the camaraderie between the residents and their families and the faculty.  It is these enduring relationships that are our greatest source of pride.  The Department also has affiliated residencies in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids and has made application to start a Fellowship is Surgical Critical Care in July 2007.

The mission of the Department of Surgery is to provide state of the art, quality, evidence based, cost effective and patient oriented care to our community.  Currently our department has strengths in the areas of general surgery, trauma and critical care, surgical endoscopy, breast, thyroid and parathyroid, bariatric, hepatobiliary, minimally invasive and plastic and reconstructive surgery. We look forward to growing and expanding our scope of services to meet the needs of the people of mid Michigan.
